Petroleum huts, pr more commonly, lamp huts, were all over the LMS system. They were used for the storage of fuel, spares and lamps for signalling, station or train use. Many were located close to a signal box.
According to 'A Pictorial Record of L.M.S. Architecture' by VR Anderson and GK Fox, the Midland Railway pioneered a lightweight type of hut and this was adopted as a 'standard' by the LMS.
Construction consisted of asbestos cement sheeting with exterior timber stiffening and corrugated asbestos roofing. The huts were placed on easily prepared foundations which could be old sleepers or bricks. The book contains a handy plan with dimensions.
Asbestos Lamp Huts were located by all three boxes on the Todmorden triangle, and the launch by Hornby of their version appeared very welcome.
Sadly, although these have the appearance of the LMS hut, they are dimensionally challenged, being too narrow and too wide, with doors and window that are both too small. Otherwise its a very neat model.
This downloadable kit allows a correctly dimensioned hut to be created.
To save mounting the sheets and printer ink, a pre-printed option is available on 335 gsm card - see below.
